Becker’s Hospital Review Names 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know-Karen Barber

Becker’s Healthcare is pleased to release the “50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know” list.

The executives featured on this list lead organizations through healthcare’s technology revolution as well as oversee EHR installations, new patient portals and telemedicine advancements. Many also oversee IT security and have built robust technology departments and teams. The individuals and institutions featured here have received recognition from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and College of Healthcare Information Management Executives.

Karen Barber, RN, CEO of Yoakum Community Hospital was among the Top 50. Mrs. Barber joined Yoakum Community Hospital in 1992 and rose in the ranks to become CEO in 2006. She led the hospital through implementing EHR and earned the Texas Hospital Association’s Pioneer Award in 2010, given to individuals for excellence in rural hospital management. The 25-bed critical access hospital Mrs. Barber oversees is about 100 miles east of San Antonio and earned the 2012 Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Bronze Award.   In 2015, Karen Barber was also recognized as Becker’s Hospital Review “Top 50 Critical Access CEOs to Know”, while Yoakum Community Hospital was named as Becker’s Hospital Review “Top 50 Critical Access Hospitals to Know”.

The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team accepted nominations for this list and made selections based on editorial research and discretion.
